Treatment of iron deficiency with iron and/or zinc bound to humic acid in food

Based on the results of intensive research in recent years, involving a series of tests on approximately 40,000 people, iron deficiency can be diagnosed if two-thirds of iron tests are abnormal (serum iron, ferritin, erythrocytes, protoporphyrin, transferrin saturation, and MCV), while iron deficiency anemia is defined as iron deficiency with a hemoglobin value of 5.0 mmol/l or below.

Clinical consequences of iron deficiency

In addition to hematological changes, iron deficiency is associated with a number of other symptoms. In the case of iron deficiency in pregnant women, the incidence of premature births and low birth weight increases, and perinatal mortality is also significant (2, 3). Iron-deficient infants and young children experience slowed mental and motor activity, and school-age children perform below the healthy average. Iron deficiency anemia in infancy, even if only short-term, results in irreversible impairment of mental functions despite adequate iron therapy (1). Cell-mediated immunity and the phagocytic function of leukocytes are impaired, resistance to bacterial infections is reduced, as is physical performance requiring endurance (4).

Given these facts, it is clear that it is justified to use iron-containing preparations that, on the one hand, do not have the undesirable cellular effects of divalent or trivalent iron and on the other hand, are also suitable for correcting metabolic disorders associated with iron deficiency, and contain substances that can directly counteract any "undesirable" effects of iron. It appears that HUMICIN –Makro and mikroelem tartalmú or the HUMICIN-Fe dietary supplement currently best meet these requirements, as they contain iron bound to the physiological substrate humic acid, as well as essential trace elements whose intake and supplementation are justified in every respect. In a study conducted at the Honvéd Hospital, the HUMICIN-Fe preparation, containing 10 mg of organic iron per day, raised the serum iron levels of the severely iron-deficient patients participating in the study to normal levels within three months, without any side effects. Among the active ingredients of the preparation, the second most important trace element after iron is zinc, whose most important biochemical functions are: enzyme activator and structure-modifying trace element.

Based on the above, it seems logical to use iron-containing humic acid complexes in daily foods, which has the advantage of maintaining the body's iron balance through the daily diet.
